How Do I Tell My Parents I’m Pregnant?

Writer: Your Options MedicalYour Options Medical

When you have an unexpected pregnancy, it can feel like the scariest moment in your life. You weren’t planning on becoming pregnant, and now you have some critical questions to consider. You are likely also concerned about how your family will react.

Parental approval can be crucial, and you might worry about their reactions. Worrying is normal, but remember that this is your pregnancy and your decision. Below you will find some helpful tips we have put together as you plan to approach your parents about your unexpected pregnancy.

1. Choose the Best Time and Place

It may be difficult for your parents to give you their full attention if you choose to tell them during a busy work week or following a stressful time. Consider the timing of your discussion. Choose a weekend day or time when your parents can listen to you completely without the distractions of work or other life stressors.

The location of your conversation is also critical. You may feel comfortable telling them in your own home, but if you are worried about their reaction, sharing the news in a public place like a cafe or park may be ideal. Remember, this is about your comfort level and well-being.

2. Bring Someone With You

You may feel frightened if you tell your parents the news by yourself. Consider bringing a friend or another family member. Having another person there may help alleviate some of the stress. It may also be helpful to have someone there who can talk with your parents after to help them process the information.

If you do tell your parents alone, consider engaging in a self-care activity after the conversation. Reading a favorite book or going out may help you to de-stress and unwind after a nerve-wracking discussion.

3. Give Them Time

Your parents may be understanding, or they might have immediate concerns. They often want what’s best for you and are worried about how you’ll cope. If their reaction is anger or anxiety, give them time to process the news. This is likely a considerable shock, and they may need space.

This is your pregnancy, meaning you cannot be forced to make a decision you feel uncomfortable with. You have the right to choose an option that works for you. Receiving options counseling at Your Options Medical is a good place to start. You can even bring a parent with you so they can ask questions and walk alongside you.
