Self-Assessment

Am I eligible for the abortion pill?

This brief self-assessment can help you understand some of the medical factors that may affect eligibility for medication abortion. It is not a medical diagnosis. Only a qualified healthcare provider can determine eligibility after reviewing your specific situation.

1. Have you had an ultrasound to confirm the pregnancy is in the uterus and not ectopic?

2. Are you less than 10 weeks (70 days) from the first day of your last menstrual period?

3. Have you been screened for health conditions that may affect eligibility (bleeding disorders, adrenal failure, IUD in place)?

4. Have you confirmed you do not have allergies to mifepristone or misoprostol?

5. Do you have access to emergency medical care within two weeks of taking the medication?

Health and safety considerations

The abortion pill (mifepristone and misoprostol) is FDA-approved through 10 weeks of pregnancy. Certain health conditions, including ectopic pregnancy, bleeding disorders, adrenal failure, or an IUD still in place, may make medication abortion unsafe. An ultrasound is an important first step because it confirms the pregnancy is in the uterus and estimates how far along you are. Both pieces of information are necessary to determine your options.

Why an ultrasound comes first

Before considering any abortion method, an ultrasound can rule out an ectopic pregnancy (a pregnancy growing outside the uterus, which is a medical emergency), confirm gestational age, and check for cardiac activity. We provide free limited obstetric ultrasounds at all four of our Massachusetts locations.
