What Are the Risks of the Abortion Pill?

You may feel pressured to make a quick decision regarding your unplanned pregnancy. You have never felt this kind of pressure before, and you may feel overwhelmed, scared, and confused. It’s ok to be feeling these emotions, and it’s normal when faced with this big decision. Know that you are not alone. The more you know about every option, the more clarity and confidence you have moving forward.

What Do I Need to Know About the Abortion Pill?

First, what is the abortion pill, and how does it work? Chemical abortion, also known as the abortion pill (RU-486), is a pregnancy termination process taken over 24-48 hours. The chemical abortion regimen consists of two different drugs: Mifepristone and Misoprostol.

The first medication, Mifepristone, should be taken with a medical professional at a clinic or office. It works to block progesterone, causing the uterus lining to thin and preventing the embryo from growing.

The second medication, Misoprostol, causes the uterus to contract, expelling the contents of the uterus, and may include blood clots and fetal tissue/parts. (Note: Please be aware this could initiate unexpected emotions.) This second medication is normally taken at home. For your health and safety, we recommend having someone with you in case of an emergency. Follow-up with a medical professional is needed to make sure the abortion is complete and there are no complications.

What Are the Risks of the Abortion Pill?

There are serious medical risks and potential complications associated with the chemical abortion. Some common risks of the abortion pill include:

1. Incomplete Abortion

An incomplete abortion happens when there are remaining parts of the pregnancy within the uterus which may include fetal tissue and parts. This requires immediate medical attention to prevent infection or other severe complications such as hemorrhage. An incomplete abortion will in most cases need to be followed by a surgical abortion. Common signs of incomplete abortion are prolonged vaginal bleeding, intense cramps, and continued dilation of the cervix.

2. Infection

Common signs of infection include muscle aches, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, and fever. However, infection is still possible without a fever. Talk to a medical professional right away if you suspect infection as it can cause serious health complications if left untreated.

Heavy and prolonged bleeding

Heavy and prolonged bleeding after a chemical abortion is not normal. Seek medical attention if this type of bleeding occurs:

  1. Passing clots that are bigger than a golf ball, lasting 2 or more hours.

  2. Soaking more than 2 large sanitary pads in an hour, for 2 hours in a row.

  3. Bleeding heavily for 12 hours in a row.
