The abortion pill is a medical procedure to terminate an early pregnancy. It’s one of the few medical procedures where you can change your mind halfway through and possibly reverse the effects.
Did you make an impulsive decision when you found out you were pregnant? Or did someone force you to choose abortion? It doesn’t matter how you got to this point. If you’re only halfway through the process, there may still be time to reverse it.
How The Abortion Pill Method Works
The abortion pill is also known as a medical or chemical abortion. You take two different drugs over 24 to 48 hours to terminate a pregnancy. The first drug, mifepristone, deprives your uterus of a particular hormone called progesterone, which every pregnancy needs to grow and thrive.
Mifepristone blocks the uterus from absorbing progesterone so the pregnancy can no longer develop.
Misoprostol, the second drug, is taken hours later to start contractions. The contractions are necessary to remove the fetus from your body. You’ll most likely experience heavier than usual bleeding and cramping.
The abortion pill method is approved for use up to 11 weeks (77 days) of pregnancy. Because of this, it’s important to have an accurate date of conception.
It’s Possible To Reverse The Abortion Pill
APR (Abortion Pill Reversal) works by injecting your body with progesterone, the hormone your body creates and needs for your pregnancy to grow. Increasing the amount of progesterone in your body helps to reverse the effects of the first drug, mifepristone.
Progesterone treatments have been used safely for decades to help reduce the chance of premature delivery for women who do not produce enough of it. Women struggling with infertility sometimes are prescribed progesterone as well.
When To Begin Abortion Pill Reversal – Timing is Crucial
If you have only taken the first drug, mifepristone, you may be able to save your pregnancy. You cannot use APR if you have taken the second drug of the abortion pill method.
Timing is of utmost importance. You should begin APR as soon as possible after taking the first drug, within 24 hours if possible. The sooner you start reversing the effects of the abortion pill, the greater chance you will have of success.
According to the Abortion Pill Rescue Network, there have been successful reversals when treatment begins within 72 hours of taking the first drug, mifepristone. But again, the sooner the reversal process begins, the higher the rate of effectiveness in saving a pregnancy.
