Woman Working Out

How We Can Help and What to Expect

You’ve taken an important step toward understanding your options and finding support during this challenging time. Your appointment is designed to provide clarity, care, and resources tailored to your unique situation. At your appointment, we can discuss:

  • Your health history, allergies, medical conditions, or anything that may make you ineligible for the abortion pill

  • Self-managed abortion steps before an abortion at home

  • What to do in case of an emergency, and what you need to share with medical providers

  • Side effects (what's normal and what isn't)

  • What to do with the tissue and remains after the abortion is complete

  • Risk prevention

  • Your Rh factor, potential STD risk, IUD removal, or any other steps medically recommended prior to an abortion

Risks & Side Effects of the Abortion Pill

The abortion pill uses two medications, mifepristone and misoprostol, typically taken within 10 weeks of pregnancy. Side effects can include, but are not limited to:

  • Heavy bleeding or blood clots

  • Severe cramping and contractions

  • Nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea

  • Chills, fever, or infection

  • Headache and fatigue

  • Incomplete abortion

It is not normal to have a high fever, hemorrhaging or severe bleeding, large clots, trouble breathing, swallowing, or talking, or swelling of the hands, face, tongue, mouth, or lips. If this happens, seek medical help immediately

Confirming pregnancy viability and ruling out an ectopic pregnancy through an ultrasound before taking the pill is a critical health and safety step. This information can determine the type of pregnancy and reduce the risks associated with taking the abortion pill.

If you have more questions, please give us a call ahead of your appointment.

Commonly Asked Questions

  1. Is medical care required after the abortion is complete? We recommend having a follow-up ultrasound to ensure there are no fetal remains left inside the uterus.

  2. Why is confirming my pregnancy through an in-person ultrasound appointment needed before an abortion? The abortion pill cannot be taken if the pregnancy is ectopic - a potentially life-threatening condition. We provide an ultrasound to help determine the location of the pregnancy and how far along you are.

  3. If I start bleeding, do I need to keep my appointment? Yes. Even if you think you are having a miscarriage or have started your period, come in and receive testing. Your appointment is also an opportunity to ask questions, explore options, and receive unbiased support.

  4. If I took the first abortion pill already, can I still come in? Yes. If you’ve only taken the first dose, you can still receive a medical consultation and see if you qualify for further cost-free services. If you have changed your mind and do not wish to continue the abortion process, abortion pill reversal may be possible. It’s still your choice, and regardless of your circumstances, we are here for you.
